Super Bowl Snacks - Buffalo Sweet Potato Fries

I love buffalo everything.  The combination of sweet and spicy in these fries is so addicting!

Ingredients

  • 4 sweet potatoes, scrubbed clean
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 3/4 cup buffalo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh chives or parsley
  • Ranch dressing, for dipping

Directions

Preheat oven to 400F.

Cut potatoes into uniform, 1/4-inch fries. In a large bowl, Spread fries onto baking sheet, drizzle with just enough oil to coat the fries and toss.

Bake until tender and slightly cripsy, about 20 minutes, flipping once, about halfway though.

Take fries out and place in a large bowl and toss with buffalo sauce. Spread fries back onto the baking sheet.

Bake another 5-10 minutes. Sprinkle with chives or parsley and serve immediately with Ranch dressing alongside for dipping.

Super Bowl Snacks - Zesty Ranch Pretzels

Since the Steelers are not in the Super Bowl, it's a little hard for me to get excited about the big game.  However, I can always get excited about an excuse to eat game day food!

For the rest of the week I would like to share some of my favorite game day treats.  Starting with this very simple fan favorite, zesty ranch pretzels.  They are easy to make and the perfect snack to take along with you to your Super Bowl party.

Ingredients:

  • One 1lb. bag of sourdough pretzels, broken into bite size pieces
  • 1 cup of canola oil
  • 1 envelope packet of Hidden Valley Ranch ranch seansoning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of dill weed
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 1/12 teaspoons of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh grated lemon zest

Directions

Preheat oven to 200 degrees.  Add all ingredients to a large bowl and toss to combine.  Pour onto an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 1 hour, tossing every 15 minutes.

Very Berry Smoothie

Lately, everyone seems to be talking about getting healthy and losing weight in the new year.  I am obviously not trying to lose weight, but I still want to eat as healthy as possible (between the cheeseburger cravings) for me and my baby.

This smoothie has really helped me get a lot vitamins and nutrients in one glass and was easy to drink on those nauseating morning.  Plus, it tastes really, really good!

Very Berry Smoothie

  • 6 0z of greek yogurt (plain or flavored) Just make sure you check the nutrition label.  Some flavored greek yogurt has more grams of sugar than a candy bar!
  • 1 cup of frozen mixed berries (I use the Trader Joe's berry medley shown in the picture that has strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries)
  • 1 cup of Vitamin Water XXX açai-blueberry-pomegranate (you can also use milk, almond/coconut milk, or water, but I like the sweetness and extra berry flavor that the Vitamin Water adds)
  • 1/2 cup of packed fresh, raw spinach leaves

Directions:

Place all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.  Serve immediately.

2014 Will Be Hard to Beat, but I Think 2015 Will Be Even Better

I think I can honestly say that 2014 was the best year yet.  Mr. Wright and I got married, traveled a bunch, and completed some much need work on our home.  We also both started our own businesses that are doing pretty well.

I have been M.I.A. for the the past few months and took a break from, well, pretty much everything.  I have been extremely nauseous and more exhausted than I ever thought possible.  However I still think that 2015 will be even better than last year.  The reason, you may ask???

MR. WRIGHT AND I ARE EXPECTING OUR FIRST BABY THIS SUMMER!!

Well, Marley is too.  He truly LOVES babies and I can only imagine how serious he is going to take his new roll as big brother.  He is just as excited as we are.  We even have a bed for him in the baby's room!

I am finally starting to feel better and I am ready to focus on the new year and all the new things coming my way.  Soon I will be stepping away from working with clients and their homes on a daily basis.  I am quite the homebody and once the baby is here, I know I will not want to be away from home much.  In turn, that will give me much more time to share things on here about what I am doing "Wright at Home".  That means many more recipes, home and design advice, more items in my online shop, and possibly a video series!

Here's to the new year and many new adventures!

Caramel Apple Slab Pie

This is a quick and easy dessert to bring to the Thanksgiving table that is sure to be a favorite!

Caramel Apple Slab Pie

For the pie:

  • 1 box of refrigerated pie crust (or 2 pie crusts), thawed as directed on the package
  • 6 cups (to 7 Cups) peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
  • juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the crumb topping:

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1-1/2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 jar (or more) caramel sauce

Directions:

Preheat over to 375 degrees F.

Unroll each thawed pie crust and lay both of them into a 9x13  inch baking pan.  Make sure that they overlap in the center, but that the pastry reaches all edges of the pan. Fold under any extra pastry hanging over the sides so that it is even with edges of pan. Crimp edges as desired.

In a bowl mix peeled apples, lemon juice, sugar, flour and ¼ teaspoon salt. Set aside. For crumb topping, cut the butter into the flour with a pastry cutter, then add in brown sugar, oats, ¼ teaspoon salt, and nuts if using.

Add apples to prepared pie pan and top with crumb topping.  Bake for 40-45 minutes or until apples are tender and filling is bubbly.  If necessary, loosely cover top with foil during the last 10 minutes to prevent over browning.  Remove the pie from the oven and drizzle ½ jar (or more, if you want!) of caramel sauce over the top.  Cool in the pan on a wire rack.

Our Deck and Renovation

Our biggest project this summer was tackling the exterior of our home.  It was quite the eye sore.  Below is the "before picture", and yes, that would be a pink house.  The existing porches were literally falling off of the house.   Some parts were even held together by duct tape!

Our house last winter

Since the house is so small, we wanted to extend our living space outdoors.  Our plan was to built a wrap around deck/porch that would be big enough to entertain, lounge, and just enjoy being outside.

The most impressive detail of this project is that my dad and Mr. Wright build the entire deck themselves!  Many thanks go out to the friends, family, and neighbors that pitched it too.  We couldn't have done it without you!  Oh, and yours truly did the painting :)

There are still a few finishing touches to be done.  We plan to build a roof over the front door and Wrightway Landscape will be installing a beautiful landscape next spring.  You will notice someone sneaked in to some of the "after" photos.  He is thoroughly enjoying his new deck space.  Scroll down to see the dramatic transformation!

Summer Adventures in Chi-Town

In June, Mr. Wright and I made a visit to Chicago.  We had never been there before so we wanted to all of the touristy things and of course, check of some of the many amazing restaurants!

Our first stop and one of my favorite's was Siena Tavern.  We have a friend who works there and it was conveniently located right across the street from our hotel!

Siena Tavern

Siena Tavern

It is owned by Top Chef restaurateur Fabio Viviani and is an Italian experience like no other.  The menu is classic itailian (some of the recipes are from Fabio's mom and grandmothers) with a modern twist.  The pizza was amazing.  The meatball was out of this world.  Yes, just a single meatball - because it is a 12 oz. meatball!

Wagyu Beef Meatball

We also had a few cocktails at Three Dots and a Dash, a super cool tiki bar in the heart of downtown Chicago.

Once inside, you feel like you are transported to a tropical oasis.  The drinks are fun, fruity, and fierce!

Of course, I just had to try out Bill and Giuliana Rancic's new restaurant, RMP.  We couldn't get enough Italian and this place was also "amazeballs".

In between our eating adventures, we visited the many tourist attractions Chicago has to offer.  We road the ferris wheel on Navy Pier, visited the parks, biked along the lake, and (of course) shopped on Michigan Ave.

The last couple of days were spent with some friends in Lincoln Park.  The Pirates happen to be in town playing against the Cubs.  (You will notice a theme to our travels, due in part to Mr. Wright's love for the Pirates).  We took in a game at Wrigley field with friends.

Our friend also had a little surprise up his sleeve when we looked up at the scoreboard and saw this!

What a great surprise!

Some more pics of beautiful Chi-town

We will definitely have to go back to Chicago very soon!  Next stop: Denver and Breckenridge Colorado!

New Site, New Store, New Adventures!

Hi there strangers!

I have had a very busy summer and have been M.I.A. on the blog front for quite some time.  In the beginning of the summer, Mr. Wright and I did some traveling.  We went on a few "mini moons" after getting married that included trips to Chicago and Colorado.  I am very exciting to share our adventures in traveling with you in the next few posts.

Hiking in Breckenridge, CO

I also took some time off to revamp my website, logo, and new online store.  This site will be the home base for everything Wright at Home.  There will be a handy recipe box, where you can easily access all the recipes that I post on the blog.  You can now purchase my fabric, wallpaper, etc. directly through gailwrightathome.com in the SHOP page.  In the near future, the shop will feature other home good items including table linens, cutting boards, and possibly handmade items from other designers!  Also, look for some new fabric patterns coming soon.  For now, my etsy shop will also remain open.

The other major project we have been working on is our own home.  We have made some dramatic changes to the exterior of our house including paint and a HUGE new porch/deck area.  I can wait to show you the before and after pictures - it's a pretty amazing change!

And last but not least, I have some VERY EXCITING NEWS that I am not allowed to share just yet, but I hope I can within the next few days.  I am very excited about this opportunity and I am going to need some help from you guys!

If you are not subscribed to my feed, you can do so by entering your email address in the box on the top right hand side of this blog, or at the bottom of my home page.  I promise you will only receive a message from me when I have something new and exciting to share.

Stay tuned for many updates to come!

Making Your Guests Feel At Home During The Holidays

Make guests feel at home by adding little luxuries and thoughtful extras to your guest bedroom or space where they will lay their head.

These easy ideas for outfitting your guest space make hosting overnighters a welcome experience for everyone.  A few comforting touches added to your home will make your family and friends feel special when they come to stay.

Be Prepared

guest

Being a good host requires some planning ahead and buying some gear.  Avoid having to buy everything at once by keeping an eye out for supplies on sale during your weekly trips to the store.  Stock up on travel size toiletries, nice towels, and extra bedding.  Store them in the guest room or other closet when not in use, so they are not mixed with your everyday items.  These items are for guests only.

Don't have a spare bedroom?  Invest in an inflatable air mattress.   They are inexpensive but a lot more comfortable than sleeping on the sofa.

Outfit your guest's quarters with a tray of necessities: an alarm clock, some favorite books or magazines, the local newspaper, and some bottled water. Even if they are sleeping on the sofa, set up a foldable tray table or chair

If  you guest will be staying in a bedroom,  stock a dresser drawer or nightstand with the necessities you have bought and fun extras.  Examples are:

  • shampoo, soaps
  • toothpaste and a toothbrush
  • lotion
  • mints
  • lip balm
  • band-aids, cough drops
  • a pen and note pad
  • fill a basket with some candy, chocolate, nuts, or other favorites of your guest.
  • you could even get some single serving bottles of their favorite liquor and mixers.

Put a TV in the room.  While the point of a visit is to spend time with each other, a television in the guest room acknowledges the fact that your guests may not want to go to bed as early as you do, or may wake up earlier and want to catch the weather forecast.

If you have the room, make sure there is adequate closet and drawer space. Supply a variety of hangers -- at least a dozen good wooden or metal ones.  And have full-length mirror hanging.

Don't have extra closet space? Give guests a spot to hang clothes by hanging an over-the-door hook and stock it with several slim hangers

 guest4

Hang another separate hook so you guest has somewhere to hang up their wet towel

 guest5

Have an extra blanket on the end of the bed or couch if needed.

Fresh Flowers always make a room feel more welcoming

Ask you guests before they arrive of anything they may want or need.  Do they drink coffee in the morning? Stock the fridge and pantry and take into consideration any special food requirements

When Your Guests Arrive

Show guests where to find snacks, drinking glasses, and utensils, and always tell them to help themselves.

In the morning offer a simple, but tasty breakfast.  If it's a lazy Sunday, bacon and eggs or pancakes are simple and not something you get to eat everyday.  If you don't have a lot of time just get some bagels from the bakery an some fresh fruit.  Keep coffee, tea and juice on hand. Even if you don’t drink it, a coffee drinker is always thankful to have the means to make a cup of joe in the morning. It doesn’t have to be anything high-end if you don’t drink it, but make sure it’s fresh.

Relax!  If you are, they will be.  The most important thing is to enjoy the time that you have with your company.
