Our Deck and Renovation

Our biggest project this summer was tackling the exterior of our home.  It was quite the eye sore.  Below is the "before picture", and yes, that would be a pink house.  The existing porches were literally falling off of the house.   Some parts were even held together by duct tape!

Since the house is so small, we wanted to extend our living space outdoors.  Our plan was to built a wrap around deck/porch that would be big enough to entertain, lounge, and just enjoy being outside.

The most impressive detail of this project is that my dad and Mr. Wright build the entire deck themselves!  Many thanks go out to the friends, family, and neighbors that pitched it too.  We couldn't have done it without you!  Oh, and yours truly did the painting :)

There are still a few finishing touches to be done.  We plan to build a roof over the front door and Wrightway Landscape will be installing a beautiful landscape next spring.  You will notice someone sneaked in to some of the "after" photos.  He is thoroughly enjoying his new deck space.  Scroll down to see the dramatic transformation!

Summer Adventures in Chi-Town

In June, Mr. Wright and I made a visit to Chicago.  We had never been there before so we wanted to all of the touristy things and of course, check of some of the many amazing restaurants!

Our first stop and one of my favorite's was Siena Tavern.  We have a friend who works there and it was conveniently located right across the street from our hotel!

It is owned by Top Chef restaurateur Fabio Viviani and is an Italian experience like no other.  The menu is classic itailian (some of the recipes are from Fabio's mom and grandmothers) with a modern twist.  The pizza was amazing.  The meatball was out of this world.  Yes, just a single meatball - because it is a 12 oz. meatball!

We also had a few cocktails at Three Dots and a Dash, a super cool tiki bar in the heart of downtown Chicago.

Once inside, you feel like you are transported to a tropical oasis.  The drinks are fun, fruity, and fierce!

Of course, I just had to try out Bill and Giuliana Rancic's new restaurant, RMP.  We couldn't get enough Italian and this place was also "amazeballs".

In between our eating adventures, we visited the many tourist attractions Chicago has to offer.  We road the ferris wheel on Navy Pier, visited the parks, biked along the lake, and (of course) shopped on Michigan Ave.

The last couple of days were spent with some friends in Lincoln Park.  The Pirates happen to be in town playing against the Cubs.  (You will notice a theme to our travels, due in part to Mr. Wright's love for the Pirates).  We took in a game at Wrigley field with friends.

Our friend also had a little surprise up his sleeve when we looked up at the scoreboard and saw this!

What a great surprise!

We will definitely have to go back to Chicago very soon!  Next stop: Denver and Breckenridge Colorado!

New Site, New Store, New Adventures!

Hi there strangers!

I have had a very busy summer and have been M.I.A. on the blog front for quite some time.  In the beginning of the summer, Mr. Wright and I did some traveling.  We went on a few "mini moons" after getting married that included trips to Chicago and Colorado.  I am very exciting to share our adventures in traveling with you in the next few posts.

I also took some time off to revamp my website, logo, and new online store.  This site will be the home base for everything Wright at Home.  There will be a handy recipe box, where you can easily access all the recipes that I post on the blog.  You can now purchase my fabric, wallpaper, etc. directly through gailwrightathome.com in the SHOP page.  In the near future, the shop will feature other home good items including table linens, cutting boards, and possibly handmade items from other designers!  Also, look for some new fabric patterns coming soon.  For now, my etsy shop will also remain open.

The other major project we have been working on is our own home.  We have made some dramatic changes to the exterior of our house including paint and a HUGE new porch/deck area.  I can wait to show you the before and after pictures - it's a pretty amazing change!

And last but not least, I have some VERY EXCITING NEWS that I am not allowed to share just yet, but I hope I can within the next few days.  I am very excited about this opportunity and I am going to need some help from you guys!

If you are not subscribed to my feed, you can do so by entering your email address in the box on the top right hand side of this blog, or at the bottom of my home page.  I promise you will only receive a message from me when I have something new and exciting to share.

Stay tuned for many updates to come!

Making Your Guests Feel At Home During The Holidays

Make guests feel at home by adding little luxuries and thoughtful extras to your guest bedroom or space where they will lay their head.

These easy ideas for outfitting your guest space make hosting overnighters a welcome experience for everyone.  A few comforting touches added to your home will make your family and friends feel special when they come to stay.

Be Prepared

guest

Being a good host requires some planning ahead and buying some gear.  Avoid having to buy everything at once by keeping an eye out for supplies on sale during your weekly trips to the store.  Stock up on travel size toiletries, nice towels, and extra bedding.  Store them in the guest room or other closet when not in use, so they are not mixed with your everyday items.  These items are for guests only.

Don't have a spare bedroom?  Invest in an inflatable air mattress.   They are inexpensive but a lot more comfortable than sleeping on the sofa.

Outfit your guest's quarters with a tray of necessities: an alarm clock, some favorite books or magazines, the local newspaper, and some bottled water. Even if they are sleeping on the sofa, set up a foldable tray table or chair

If  you guest will be staying in a bedroom,  stock a dresser drawer or nightstand with the necessities you have bought and fun extras.  Examples are:

  • shampoo, soaps
  • toothpaste and a toothbrush
  • lotion
  • mints
  • lip balm
  • band-aids, cough drops
  • a pen and note pad
  • fill a basket with some candy, chocolate, nuts, or other favorites of your guest.
  • you could even get some single serving bottles of their favorite liquor and mixers.

Put a TV in the room.  While the point of a visit is to spend time with each other, a television in the guest room acknowledges the fact that your guests may not want to go to bed as early as you do, or may wake up earlier and want to catch the weather forecast.

If you have the room, make sure there is adequate closet and drawer space. Supply a variety of hangers -- at least a dozen good wooden or metal ones.  And have full-length mirror hanging.

Don't have extra closet space? Give guests a spot to hang clothes by hanging an over-the-door hook and stock it with several slim hangers

Hang another separate hook so you guest has somewhere to hang up their wet towel

 guest5

Have an extra blanket on the end of the bed or couch if needed.

Fresh Flowers always make a room feel more welcoming

Ask you guests before they arrive of anything they may want or need.  Do they drink coffee in the morning? Stock the fridge and pantry and take into consideration any special food requirements

When Your Guests Arrive

Show guests where to find snacks, drinking glasses, and utensils, and always tell them to help themselves.

In the morning offer a simple, but tasty breakfast.  If it's a lazy Sunday, bacon and eggs or pancakes are simple and not something you get to eat everyday.  If you don't have a lot of time just get some bagels from the bakery an some fresh fruit.  Keep coffee, tea and juice on hand. Even if you don’t drink it, a coffee drinker is always thankful to have the means to make a cup of joe in the morning. It doesn’t have to be anything high-end if you don’t drink it, but make sure it’s fresh.

Relax!  If you are, they will be.  The most important thing is to enjoy the time that you have with your company.
